The Legal paper size is an elongated format measuring 8.5 inches wide by 14 inches tall, giving it a width-to-height aspect ratio of 1.65:1 and a surface area of 119 square inches. Legal is commonly used for legal documents, hence its name, as well as other applications needing more vertical space than the standard Letter size. Its dimensions originate from old papermaking practices but Legal was popularized for storing legal documents in the late 19th century. Even as digital formats become more prevalent, Legal remains a standard paper size in the United States, Canada, and parts of South America. It is sometimes known as Foolscap or Government Legal. The Legal dimensions approximate the ANSI B size but with a slightly different aspect ratio.
