The Executive paper size is a shortened portrait format measuring 7.25 inches wide by 10.5 inches tall, giving it a width-to-height aspect ratio of 1.45:1 and a surface area of approximately 76 square inches. Executive is used for documents, binders, and other applications where a compact size is desirable but Letter would provide too much extra space. It fits well in briefcases and some hanging folders and offers a middle ground between Letter and Half Letter sizes. Executive's dimensions are close to the Japanese industrial standard Chou 3 and the ISO A5 size. It was popularized in the early 20th century by emerging executive office culture for condensed but still professional correspondence and record keeping. Executive remains a standard condensed paper size today.
