The ANSI A paper size, commonly referred to as Letter size, is 8.5 inches wide by 11 inches tall, giving it a surface area of 93 square inches. ANSI A is the most common paper size used in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and other countries in the Americas for everyday stationery, printers, and office use. The origins of its dimensions are not well documented, but some sources suggest the 11-inch length stems from papermaking practices in the days before mechanization. ANSI A became a standard size in part for its ease of use with desktop printers and photocopiers. Its aspect ratio of 1.29 makes it slightly less elongated than the ISO A4, which helped with adoption for technical drawings. Today, ANSI A is ubiquitous in both office and home settings.
