The Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) defines two main series of paper sizes - the JIS A series and JIS B series. The JIS A series matches the international ISO A series dimensions while the JIS B series has the same aspect ratio but 1.5 times larger area than JIS A. The JIS A and B sizes are widely used in Japan, China, and Taiwan for printing and stationery. Some other traditional Japanese sizes still used mostly for commercial printing purposes are the Shiroku-ban and Kiku sizes. While the JIS A/B and some traditional sizes are very popular across East Asia, they have not seen widespread international adoption beyond that region. The ISO A series remains the global standard, though North America and parts of South America still mainly use the inch-based US Letter format. The Japanese JIS sizes fill an important niche role in the East Asian market but currently have limited use elsewhere globally.
