Book Page Sizes

The most ubiquitous book formats are the pocket-sized mass market paperback, typically in Octavo or 12mo sizes around 6" x 9", and the larger trade paperback, usually Crown Octavo or Quarto around 5" x 8" and 8.5" x 11". Hardcovers are commonly published in the midsize Royal Octavo and the larger Quarto. While metric A and B formats gained adoption internationally, traditional Imperial sizes still dominate in North America and the UK. Less common oddball formats include 16mo, 18mo, and 32mo for small editions, Elephant Folio and Super Royal for oversized books, and Miniature and Thumb sizes for novelty miniature books. But the majority fall within the few standard Octavo, Quarto, and Crown sizes that have proven reliable for portable publications.
