With oversized dimensions of approximately 9" x 12" (230mm x 305mm), the Super Royal format has a generous surface area around 108 square inches or 697 square cm. Also known as Imperial Quarto, this large book size provided ample room for text formatting and illustrations. Super Royal grew popular in the 19th century for deluxe editions of important fiction and nonfiction as well as art books. The spacious 9" x 12" size allowed books to showcase printing quality and detailed content while still being manageable. Especially common for high-end gift books and collectors' editions in Victorian England, Super Royal conveyed luxury and quality craftsmanship. But its roots trace back to folding four leaves of paper in one signature during old bookbinding methods. The Super Royal size comfortably fits 350-600 pages printed on both sides. Though cumbersome for portable reading, Super Royal granted books prestige and visual appeal. Its success arose from denoting important literary content while providing generous space for an optimal reading experience.
