With large dimensions of approximately 12" x 19" (304mm x 482mm), the Folio format has a generous surface area around 228 square inches or 1471 square cm. Sometimes referred to as Full Folio or Broadsheet Folio, this oversized book size allowed ample space for text formatting and illustrations. Especially popular in the 17th-18th centuries for important editions of reference books, religious texts, and classics, Folio denoted authority and prestige. The spacious 12" x 19" pages provided readers with a grand viewing experience emphasizing visual impact. But the name Folio originated from each leaf of paper being folded just once, creating two leaves or four book pages. Though cumbersome for portable use, Folios were ideal for bibliophiles and libraries displaying impressive editions. The ample Folio size comfortably fit around 150 pages printed on just one side. While less practical than smaller formats, Folios gave books unmatched presence and conveyed the significance of contents meant for study and exhibition.
