The Government Legal paper size is 8.5 inches wide by 13 inches tall, giving it a surface area of 110.5 square inches. Also known as Foolscap, Government Legal emerged as an imperial paper size used by the United States government for official forms and documents. Its dimensions stem from trimming the older British legal size of 8 x 13.5 inches down to 8.5 x 13 inches. The name Foolscap referred to the watermark depicting a jester's cap which appeared on paper used for government bureaucracy. The more elongated shape provided room for additional text and details. Government Legal offered a balance of compact size for correspondence and ample area for forms requiring more space than standard Letter size. It was once common for U.S. legal documents and legislation but has been largely supplanted by regular Letter size. Still, Government Legal persists in applications needing more vertical space than Letter in a portable format.
