At extremely narrow dimensions of 35mm x 52mm, the PA9 format has a miniscule surface area of just 0.0018 square meters. Belonging to the transitional PA paper size system proposed in 1975, PA9 directly bridges the nearly useless A9 size from ISO 216 standards and the PA8 format before it. PA9 shares the height of A9 but gains a smidgen more horizontal space with its marginally wider width. This tiny size has no alternatively known names or acronyms. Applications leveraging PA9’s extremely compact area include custom postage, tiny coupon inserts, and special labeling. However, its impractical size severely restricts widespread utility. As an increment between the already tiny PA8 and A9, PA9 holds no unique history besides filling another transitional gap. Despite rejection of the PA series for ISO inclusion, PA9 occupies a role, however tiny, as a width step between scarcely viable sizes. While dwarfing into near irrelevance beside larger formats, PA9 manages to eke out function where A9 finds itself pushing the boundaries of usability. It fulfills its sole purpose as one final horizontal expansion before reaching the comically small A9.
