The ID-3 format specifies the largest standard card size defined in ISO/IEC 7810 at 125 x 88 mm, approximately 4.921 x 3.465 inches. With an area of 11,000 mm2, ID-3 is also referred to as the B7 size. Unlike ID-1 and ID-2, ID-3 does not have any other common alternative names. The ID-3 size was introduced specifically for passport booklets in order to standardize dimensions internationally. Prior to ID-3, passport sizes varied considerably between countries. Standardizing on ID-3 allowed passport booklets to be processed more efficiently and enabled globally interoperable passport readers. While passports are the predominant application, ID-3 may also be used for other travel documents or national IDs requiring similar dimensions to a passport booklet. The added surface area compared to ID-1 and ID-2 formats allows more visa pages and security features to be incorporated into a passport booklet. ID-3 remains the standard passport booklet size today, facilitating immigration and border control across many different countries.
