The ID-000 format specifies the smallest card size defined in ISO/IEC 7810 at 25 x 15 mm, or approximately 0.984 x 0.591 inches. With a compact area of just 375 mm2, the ID-000 size is designed for tiny smart cards and SIM cards. It is commonly referred to as a mini-SIM when used for subscriber identity modules in mobile phones and other devices. First introduced in 1996, the ID-000 or mini-SIM superseded the prior plug-in SIM standard and enabled smaller and thinner phone designs. The mini-SIM is 40% smaller than the standard SIM card size, allowing it to fit into shrinking electronic devices. Beyond mobile SIM cards, ID-000 smart cards also began to be used for micro payment and security applications that required an extremely compact card footprint. The versatility and space savings of the ID-000 format made it the ideal choice as SIM technology evolved from 2G to 3G, 4G, and 5G networks. Today it remains the standard SIM card size, providing identity, authentication, and data storage in billions of cellular gadgets worldwide.
