The Western European business card size has dimensions of 85 mm x 55 mm, which converts to approximately 3.35 inches x 2.17 inches. With a surface area of 46.75 sq cm or 7.25 sq inches, it is slightly wider than the North American size. The Western European size can fit inside a C6 envelope or sleeve (114 mm x 162 mm).
This card size is sometimes referred to as the international ISO standard or ISO 216 A8 size. The origins of 85 mm x 55 mm can be traced back to the German DIN 476 standard published in 1922, which defined paper sizes based on halving areas. This created a consistent system of sizes suited for printing presses and efficient paper use. The A8 size was deemed well-suited for business cards and adopted broadly across Western Europe. It allowed easy printing using existing equipment and optimized paper area. The ISO 216 standard published in 1975 brought the A8 size into a global standard which it remains today.
