The rarely used SIS E9 paper size establishes diminutive dimensions of just 39 mm x 55 mm, enclosing an area of 0.0021 square meters. Wedged between SIS E8 and ISO A8, it represents one of the more obscure Swedish niche extensions.
Given its extremely limited adoption, the SIS E9 format does not benefit from common alternate nickname variants. Only in certain Swedish contexts might it ever be referred to informally by its metric measurements.
Conceivable applications are quite restricted due to its unfamiliarity, but could perhaps include novelty postcards, some embellishments on greeting cards, or ornamental inserts paired with packaging at larger sizes. However, the granular Swedish interpolations utterly failed to take hold.
The SIS E9 emerged from Sweden's early 20th century endeavor to systematically insert hyper-specific sizes between ISO's prevailing A, B and C families. The vision was enabling subtle scaling of content across a spectrum of widths and heights. But the effort was undermined by economic factors around paper manufacturing, near total lack of international standardization, and inertia perpetuating existing norms. So today SIS E9 remains an obsolete relic, its backstory one of ambition dashed against material reality and systemic resistance to change.
