The SIS E1 paper size has dimensions of 621 mm x 878 mm. With an area of about 0.54 square meters, it is the second largest format in the E series defined by the Swedish SIS 01 47 11 standard.
Like other lesser used Swedish extensions, the SIS E1 does not tend to go by any common alternative names. It may occasionally be referred to informally using its Swedish dimensions, "sexhundratjugoett gånger åttahundrasjuttioåtta" millimeters.
Potential use cases for SIS E1 sized paper include large format drawings, architectural plans, wide academic posters, and some packaging designs. However, its niche status within Sweden, lack of global adoption, and substantial dimensions limit its everyday practical utility.
As part of the Swedish standards organization's efforts to systematically fill gaps between ISO standard paper sizes, the SIS E1 slotted right between the SIS E0 and ISO A0 formats. The vision was to enable more incremental sizing options for scaling content across sheets. But the market momentum behind ISO standardization, as well manufacturing considerations, ultimately prevented widespread adoption of the new intermediate sizes. So SIS E1 remains an obscure relic of a failed attempt at format expansion, seldom used outside Sweden. Its story represents the inertia that reinforces international standards.
