The #9 Business envelope has a width of 8.875 inches and a height of 3.875 inches, giving it a total surface area of 34.47 square inches. Its maximum enclosure size is 3.625 x 8.625 inches. This envelope is also simply referred to as the #9 envelope.
The #9 gets its numbering from William Irwin Martin's late 1800s system that standardized envelope sizes. As an increment up from sizes like the #6 and #7, the #9 provided even more vertical space for content. Its dimensions made it popular for commercial mailings that required room for multiple pages, inserts or brochures. Today the #9 is ubiquitous for business reply mail, as its size allows space for payment slips, letters, and other contents useful for transactional mailing purposes. It remains one of the most common and versatile business envelope sizes.
