The DL envelope has dimensions of 220mm x 110mm, giving it a surface area of 24,200 mm2. Its maximum enclosure size is typically around 105mm x 215mm. DL stands for "DIN lang" which translates to "DIN long" in German. It gets this name because the DL was created based on folding a standard DIN A4 sheet of paper in thirds parallel to the shorter sides. When an A4 sheet (210mm x 297mm) is folded into thirds widthwise it becomes DL sized at 110mm x 220mm. This allows the versatile DL envelope to easily fit a letter, invoice, brochure or other document from an A4 sheet folded into thirds. The DL is very popular worldwide for commercial, personal and business mail purposes. Along with C5 and C6 sizes, it remains one of the most common envelope sizes globally.
