The landscape dimensions facilitate binding technical documents and landscape-oriented presentations while retaining the elongated aspect ratio of 1.25 used throughout the D series. In particular, the D2 sheet matches the size of traditional French administration dossiers and double scales down from the larger D1 format. Its landscape orientation paired with the proportions make D2 well-suited for ledgers, contractual agreements, and filing correspondence.

The 1920s German engineering industry likely utilized D2 sheets similar to the French government administrations mentioned. The size also relates closely to the British "Imperial" standards of 22 x 30 inches predating ISO adoption. As with other minor D formats, D2 served specialized technical drawing and filing use cases in early 20th century Germanic and Central European countries. However, mass publication needs eventually favored standardized dimensions like ISO A3 and A4. Nonetheless, the original DIN 476 specification signified intent to provide sizing flexibility through its harmonically scaling D series alongside the common A, B, and C sizes.
