The D0 paper size has dimensions of 771 mm x 1090 mm, making it the largest format in the D series of the DIN 476 German paper size standard originally published in 1922. With an area of 0.84 m2, the expansive D0 page provided ample space for large format technical drawings requiring great detail. The elongated shape with a width to height ratio of around 1.25 approximated the frame of architectural plans and engineering diagrams well.
Though not as extensively adopted as the more well-known A0 format, one can consider D0 as an alternative for oversized documents. Pre-existing German military maps and naval architectural sketches likely inspired the dimensions. The size also had rough parallels to the even larger British "Double Elephant" and Chinese "Yi Kai" standards predating the 20th century metric transition. As reproduction and drafting equipment advanced, demand for very large sheets like D0 declined over the course of the 1900s in favor of more standardized dimensions. Nonetheless, the original DIN 476 system retained the size to furnish documents at essentially any scale.
